What Is a Sangeet? Meaning, Traditions and What Happens

The short answer: a sangeet is a pre-wedding celebration of music and dance at Indian weddings. The word means “music”, and it is often explained as “sung together”. Family and friends of the couple perform songs and choreographed dances for each other, usually a day or two before the wedding. It began as a North Indian tradition where the women of the family gathered to sing folk songs, and today it is one of the most anticipated events of weddings across India and among Indian families abroad.

If you are planning your first sangeet, attending one as a guest, or explaining it to friends who have never been to an Indian wedding, here is everything that happens and why it matters.

QuestionAnswer

Where the sangeet comes from

Traditionally, the sangeet was a “ladies’ sangeet”: the women of the family gathered in the days before the wedding to sing folk songs, often to the beat of a dholak, teasing the bride and celebrating the marriage. It was especially associated with North Indian and Punjabi weddings.

Over time it grew into an event for everyone. Today both families take part, the songs are mostly Bollywood, and the performances are choreographed and rehearsed. Many families from regions where the sangeet was never a tradition now include one as well.

  • The couple’s dance: usually the highlight of the evening.
  • Hosts or anchors who introduce each act, tell stories about the couple and keep the evening moving.
  • Games and surprises between performances, such as quizzes about the couple or a surprise act.

Do you need a choreographer?

You do not need one, but most families who want a polished evening hire one. A wedding choreographer plans the acts, edits the music, teaches each group and runs the show on the night. At Sumit Khetan Entertainment, rehearsals run over 6 to 8 days on average, with 2 to 3 of those days dedicated to the couple, and we are usually booked around 6 months in advance.

Tips for guests

  • Dress up. The sangeet is usually the most glamorous pre-wedding event, so festive Indian or Indo-western outfits are the norm.
  • Wear shoes you can dance in. The dance floor opens after the performances.
  • Cheer loudly. Most performers are nervous family members, not professionals.
  • Arrive on time. Performances usually start early in the evening, and you will not want to miss the first acts.
